On January 1st, 2005 the United States Golf Association (USGA) implemented a USGA Handicap Licensing Program for Clubs. The Pryor Creek Golf Club filed its license application with the USGA on March 9th, 2005 and we have been assigned USGA Club No. 1102. The MSGA endorsed our license application in April 2005 and our handicap system was approved and licensed by the USGA on June 9, 2005.
This new USGA program has allowed Pryor Creek to modify our membership agreements with the Montana State Golf Association (MSGA) and provide our members a handicap system - the Member Handicap Zone - that has vastly improved member service and features over the system we have been accustomed to with the MSGA .

System features ...

  • USGA Handicap System™ Compliance - Our new handicapping system (the Member Handicap Zone©) is in full compliance with USGA Handicap System™ requirements and provides several improvements to maintain the integrity of handicaps issued by our club. Under the terms of our license, we will continue to recognize the MSGA regular playing season for our area - usually April through October - and the MSGA handicap index revision schedule - Monthly, generally on the first of every month of the playing season. See the USGA Handicap Revision Schedule for reference.
  • Improved Member Features - The Member Handicap Zone handicap system is fully on-line, allowing our members to review their handicap, index, scoring records, handicap card and post scores* from any Internet enabled computer. Because our handicap system software was custom written for Pryor Creek Golf Club, we can offer features not available with the MSGA system - Internet based access, display of new scores posted (since last revision - Coded 'n'), scoring statistics, to name a few. There are alsofeatures available to the Pro Shop staff and Handicap Committee to provide improved system adminstration, member services and to help us ensure the integrity of the handicaps we issue.
* For security reasons, certain Internet host addresses may be blocked from entering score additions. All other functions of the handicap system will remain available through the Internet.
  • Reduced Costs - Because our handicap system is available on-line and implemented together with the Pryor Creek Golf Club web site, our handicap system maintenance costs will be dramatically lower than those with the MSGA system. Your member handicap fee will remain at $20 per year, but greater proportion of your fees will stay with Pryor Creek Golf Club - to help us continue to improve our courses and facilities, provide support for our local and regional junior golf programs and generally provide the most benefit for our membership.

Is there a Down-Side to the Member Handicap Zone Handicap System?

Sort of.
The MSGA (via Mr. Jim Opitz, MSGA Executive Director) has issued a preliminary ruling that our members will not be eligible to enter any of the 3 MSGA tournaments - the Montana State Amateur, the Montana State Mid-Amateur or the Montana State Senior Amateur - unless they have a current, valid MSGA handicap. Our position on this matter is that our handicap system is fully compliant with USGA Handicap System and is verified as such by virtue of our USGA license, as well as the MSGA endorsement, and is therefore valid at any golf course/event in the United States.

Having said that, if you anticipate playing in one (or more) of the 3 MSGA events, you may request that you be entered in the MSGA system, instead of the Member Handicap Zone. Simply contact the Pro Shop. If you have any otherquestions about the system or have suggestions for additional features, please contact the Pro Shop or you may e-mail questions/suggestions to the Handicap Committee.
